going to be fun to revisit some of these albums that we enjoyed when we were younger and I want to uh say that we

were younger when we enjoyed Twist's sister okay so we chuckled because you

we'll say this as we did for the faith in the mor we are not Twisted Sister experts we don't absolutely not it's

been a long time since I've looked into Twist's sister or listened to their music yeah so if you think you're coming

Twist's sister jumped on the scene with this album for most people most people

would not have really seen or heard of them at least not me at being 10 um this

was my introduction to Twist's sister and really my only true

exposure to them I I did I didn't follow their career I enjoyed them basically

just through this album yeah and that's fair and that actually is kind of the

experience that most people of this band uh have it's

weird how some bands no matter who they are or some artist solo artists or otherwise throughout all genres some can

have a lasting career for whatever reason uh a relevant you could talk about your you 2 and your cplay or your

Bruce Springstein or your Metallica these are the you know the juggernauts of their respective genres and and parts

of the music landscape whether you like them or not they're there and they've sold millions and millions upon millions

of albums throughout Decades of of concert going and then there's bands like Twist's sister for a moment in time

they were pretty big and pretty pretty much in zeis of the youth but before we

start talking about stay hungry we will just say quickly again we're not Twisted Sister experts but they had their first

album was 1982's Under the Blade I've done more digging than my brother Jason has with Twist's sister throughout the

years and there's some good songs from this album that I will just make sure that I will mention that I do like shoot

him down it's actually a really fun rocker under the blades a great song those are ones that are obviously on

their greatest hits is probably where I'm familiar with those songs from that album and this was back in the time J

you'll remember this back in the time when Al bands would just pump out albums it's like it seems like it's anywhere

from 3 to 10 years where a band will release an album well what I kind of reviewing doing a little bit of homework

to get ready for this podcast this album was recorded in February and

March of 1984 and the album was released in May that's an impressive turnaround

completely impressive I don't know the way that they do music nowadays is just very

different the way that they pre-planned tours are like being put

together before the album's even done like there's so much behind the scenes and you wonder why why does it

take three or four or five years for an album to come out if you're a big band if you're Pearl Jam per se you know

let's say Pearl Jam you are planning a tour and marketing well before an album

is even close to being complete back then they just recorded an album and

threw it out hope people liked it and go like oh we have an audience so we'll we'll create a tour behind this it's

different it's very different and this album sold 3 million which is solid but

back in the day when all people were doing was buying albums you know whether it's CDs or tapes probably tapes at this

time in 84 obviously not CDs yet like a lot of album you know sales but it's

also not a lot yet everybody knows who Twist's sister is is they know they're two or three big hits but they did that

just on 3 million albums and MTV their videos were famous on MTV they were

hitting the you know the start of the MTV it influencing how we view our music

or enjoy our music they hid everything kind of all at the same time they had

obviously their looks they had their like two big uh songs off of this

album they had the MTV exposure yeah the rest is history I mean they still I

think but they tour it up to 2016 if I'm remembering correctly it may have been

their last tour D Snider the lead singer of Twist's sister and the only member of the band that I can name without looking

at their Wikipedia page that's just me being honest again we're not experts but D Snider certainly a notable and even

well respected vocalists throughout the metal Community the guy can sing and he can sing live yes and what's interesting

funny about Van Hill 1984 was I used to think that album came out in ' 84 not understanding the reference to the uh

George Orwell book by the same title but that being said we were we certainly loved music and so when this came out

this was kind of a combination of talk about D Snider and his look and the band's

look with the makeup on their face and wearing you know not feminine clothing that's

not what they were wearing but they were bright pink colors on the cover of the album stay hungry D Snider is wearing a

pink shredded clothes with like shoulder pads almost his hair is very curly and

person that um did the original recording I mean he had a lot of history within the musical industry it's not

like he didn't know what he was doing I think it's just the technology it's just the way that things have developed over

the years this particular album just didn't age well not that the music or

the lyrics are horrible it's just the production value is not good good sounding production was not foreign to

bands at the time I mean I mean look at Van Halen's albums before this album look at uh Nam numerous Artisan bands

from the beatle onward you know that their production sounded better it sounded like they might have had a a

Sister was the most dangerous guy on the planet this was when metal met its first organized attack Twisted Sister and

eight other metal bands were placed on a list called the filthy 15 because their music was deemed offensive by the

parents music Resource Center D Snider was summoned to testify before the US Congress to defend his music and his

livelihood 1984 was a pretty insane time for Twisted Sister We're hearing bits

and pieces about this parents music resource center and Tipper Gore but not

really registering because we were getting protests and and religious groups at every show

so just another parent group that was putting Twisted Sister on a on a a list

of targets we have always uh talked about the positive aspects of the music

industry but of course the Highlight has been on the excesses that have been

allowed to develop as we have tried to focus our concern on those excesses somebody approached our office that they

want the senate committee is having a hearing on censorship with the pmrc and wanted to know if I would come and speak

now my view of it when I heard it was they want me to carry the flag into battle hell yeah Braveheart baby

braveart wasn't even out but that sort of mentality give me the flag man let's go I knew that they were like everybody

else grossly underestimating me I knew that they viewed me as just another

dunderheaded rocker and they would bring me in make me look like a fool and I would help their cause they did not know

that I could construct a sentence and speak English fluently and I'm there in my cut off denim my

the whole concept of lyrical interpretation and judgment can be and how many times this can amount to little

they've accused me of disproving without beyond a shadow of a doubt that everything they've accused me of has

scrambling they were saying that Under the Blade was about s masochism and bondage it was about my guitar player

throat operation it's not really a a wild leap of the imagination to jump to

the conclusion that that's about something other than surgery or hospitals neither of which are mentioned

it many ways uh Ms Gore was looking for satto masochism in bondage and she found it someone looking for surgical
