Tom Petty’s Greatest Hits

The WORST of the BEST_ Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers.m4a
Are we live?
We're live.
It's like when you take selfies, you're like...
You make sure whatever, yeah.
Yeah.
Well, that's partly why I have a beard, just to give myself a chin.
Welcome, Ruben.
Welcome.
Welcome to my house.
Yeah, it's a beautiful studio.
Good to be here.
Good to be here as well.
Welcome to the worst of the best podcast.
You wanted the best.
Well, they didn't freaking make it.
So here's what you get.
From Canada, Ryan and Ruben.
So this is episode 14 of the worst of the best podcast.
We just want to welcome everyone here.
And it's been a while since we've recorded a live episode.
We record a whole bunch all together.
So people can watch them on our Facebook all together.
But then we release them periodically or weekly on our iTunes account.
But anyways, this is the live recording.
Wow.
There's magic in the air tonight, Ryan.
Yes, there's magic in the air.
Well, let's get ready to this is a big episode.
Ruben, why don't you explain the shirt that you're wearing?
Tom Petty, 40th anniversary tour.
I went and saw him in Vancouver this past August.
He was my last bucket list item for somebody to see live.
And Tom Petty kicked the bucket.
I was going to say it, but I was like, Tom Petty kicked the bucket shortly after you seen them on your bucket list.
Do you think there's any connection to that?
Well, there might be.
Because, as you know, I don't do sports.
I'm not a sports fan.
I watch as much professional sports as professional athletes watch me.
Oh, really?
Meaning it doesn't happen.
Right.
The day he died, I happened to be wearing the shirt to work.
And then I get a Facebook message from you.
Tom Petty had a cardiac arrest or something like that.
Yeah, I saw on Facebook.
We see all of our not fake news.
I saw on Facebook that Tom Petty had a cardiac arrest and that he was not doing well.
And I was like, then I read again that he was taking off life support or life, yeah, like help.
And he wasn't dead yet, but the brain activity was gone.
Yeah, you literally saw him.
What was it?
A month?
Half a month?
Something like that, yeah.
Yeah, so I never got a chance to see Tom Petty live.
It's funny.
I thought that he had.
No, I've never seen him live.
And he's one of those guys that I would obviously love to see live.
And alive.
Yeah, singing him now.
Yeah.
But Rock and Roll lives forever.
And his music is here to stay.
It's not going anywhere.
And I don't know how long this episode will last on Facebook.
Because anytime we play music, Facebook likes to take that away.
But, oh yeah, that's why we really need to make sure we need to record this on another separate device.
I'm recording, Ryan.
Perfect.
So Ruben is doing a secondary recording.
Holy crap.
Because, like I said, Facebook likes to take this away when they hear.
So we're going to play some of his greatest songs ever recorded by Tom Petty.
And we will choose, at the end of playing some samples of his songs, what is the worst of his best.
And when we say his greatest songs, by sales.
So his best-selling album is his greatest album, released in 1993.
Been on the charts, actually, again for the past four and a half years, for the past 253 weeks.
And is currently number two.
That's pretty amazing.
So right now, on the billboard, number two is Tom Petty's greatest hits.
Shania Twain, in front of him.
Have you seen Shania Twain's latest song or video?
No, I have not.
I'm guessing she's all sexed up.
No, she's wearing, like, a tent.
Oh.
She went the other way.
She's wearing a dress that is not very flattering.
I'm not being, I'm just saying.
Enough on Shania.
All right.
So back to Tom Petty, who is fantastic.
So, yeah, best song on the album.
It's sold millions of records, lots of spins, lots of downloads.
These are his greatest hits.
So we're just going to listen to the first song on the greatest album is American Girl.
I think we all know this one.
I don't know how much you can play before Facebook freaks out.
So anyways, there we go.
Slow down, Zuckerberg.
American Girl.
That's actually my daughter's favorite song, Tom Petty.
Oh, really?
I think it's because there's this girl in it.
My daughter is an American girl.
Hey, wow.
Wow.
Yeah, Madison was born in the United States, my only daughter.
She's an American girl.
Next song on the album, Breakdown.
Get the beauty that you want.
Say there is more sense in Britain.
Your eyes give you away.
Nice song.
It is.
It's a great song.
And it has the crescendo in it.
Right.
Yeah.
Which the clip doesn't show.
Hey, I never got to finish.
Oh, of course.
About the sports teams and all that.
Let's interlude it.
So the day he died, I was wearing the shirt.
Right.
So I'm thinking, well, maybe that's bad luck.
Like, if I wore the shirt, someone's going to die that day.
Like a bad 90s movie.
Oh, wow.
So the next day, I wore my Elton John t-shirt.
Ah.
How's he doing?
No word.
I think he's just doing fine.
I think I just happened to be wearing the shirt.
I wonder if, does Elton John get his hair the same place that John Travolta gets his?
It might.
It might.
It might.
So later, I'm wearing the shirt.
And so I had customers going, did you just put on that shirt because Tom Petty died?
I'm like, no, I'll put on a shirt because that's the shirt I picked for today.
And then I had a customer going, what are the chances?
What are the chances you'd wear that shirt the day he died?
And I said, actually, pretty good if you saw my wardrobe.
Yeah, it's true.
Yeah, this shirt's old.
Anyone that's orange will die.
Is that a threat to the president?
I know.
I thought the same thing when I said that.
I was wondering if you're going to catch that.
Let's sing to your heart.
Sorry, I shouldn't sing.
No, you shouldn't sing.
It's going to do what you do.
She's like me, you're like a loving, but she does need you.
Okay.
Listen to your heart.
It's funny that he calls himself Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.
Tom Petty, not your classic heartbreaker.
Very unique features to his face and his hair, his whole getup.
There's a great documentary on Netflix for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.
It's a four-hour documentary.
Oh, really?
It's really, really good.
I think I remember seeing that.
Now that he's passed, I will honor him and watch that.
I do love it.
You know what?
I love a good documentary, even if it's not something I know anything about.
It goes into the name.
Because his first band that he got a deal with was called Mud Crutch.
That's a cool name.
It is a cool name, yeah.
Mud Crutch.
This is what I actually like about Petty and also another thing I like about Neil Young
is that they have a storied career, a few different bands.
Well, there's Tom Petty, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Mud Crutch, and Traveling Wilburys.
Traveling Wilburys.
Love them.
Unfortunately, the songs that he did aren't included in this best of list of where we'll choose
the worst song.
But I'll tell you right now, none of the things he did with the Wilburys would have been
considered the worst of the other songs that I've picked as the worst song from his best.
Does that make sense?
No, I don't know what I'm talking about.
You're saying the Wilburys are so good.
Yes.
There's no way you'd pick it as a worst.
That's right.
Yeah.
By the way, one of his bandmates, Bob Dylan, before his passing said that Tom Petty's lyrics
like Shakespeare.
Nice.
Yeah.
So who's alive in the Wilburys right now?
Dylan.
Jeff Lynne.
Bob Dylan's alive?
Yeah.
He's alive.
He's alive.
He had a concert booked for Victoria.
But due to poor ticket sales, he...
Did he get...
He couldn't make it.
It didn't sell?
Well, his record of the last time that he was here, it was such a horrible concert with terrible
sound and him playing obscure songs that everyone's like...
You know what?
I'm not a Bob Dylan fan.
I appreciate whatever...
He is the artist that he is.
Sure.
But I'm not a fan of his.
And there's some songs that are decent.
I'm just not a fan of his rambling.
But what was I going to say?
Oh, the obscure song part.
I think that's pretty cool that he played obscure songs.
Because I wish an artist that I am a big fan of would do that more often.
You know, play some songs where a true fan of the...
Hey, I love that song.
Not the whole set list, mind you.
Because you kind of have to appeal to the general...
Yeah.
Ticket-buying audience.
But anyways, I guess if you do a whole concert that way, it might not appeal to the large audience.
Well, when I saw Petty, the very first song was the first song they released, I think.
Or they wrote.
Oh, yeah.
I heard about that.
That's cool.
It was just good.
It was one of those moments where you're glad it was the first song.
Not the closer?
Not the closer.
The first song, not the closer.
You still recording over there?
I got a feeling Facebook's going to ban this video.
So if you're watching this live, consider this a real treat.
Wow, it is a treat.
Because all our music ones get banned.
You're just cutting off with the authors.
I apologize.
Yeah, sorry.
I don't know.
There's one of those moments where you're glad that the songs are short.
Tom Petty's songs are typically quite short.
Yeah, they're not very long, are they?
No.
Sorry, Ruben.
I didn't mean to do you like that.
Good pun.
Don't do it like that.
So, man, I need you, baby.
Don't do it like that.
Listen to me, can you see?
Baby, you're good.
All right.
I'll already say the next song will not be on my list of the worst songs.
I love the song.
Is it a small surprise that this greatest hits album, it's a pretty strong album.
It's very strong.
Yeah.
So far, so good.
That was an episode.
That was single seven.
It's called Even the Losers.
Even the Losers.
Which has a great line.
Even losers get lucky sometime.
Maybe we will get lucky with our podcast sometime.
We definitely fit the loser part.
That's true.
Let's see if we can.
Okay.
I'll play your cards right.
All right.
Here Comes My Girl.
Here Comes My Girl.
Great song.
Boy, this is going to be tough to pick the worst.
I have my pick, but I don't want to.
I don't know what.
I don't know what yours is.
For the record, we don't know what the other person's pick is.
No, I don't know.
Okay.
The Waiting.
This song.
The Waiting is killing me.
Oh, boy.
Well, this song's been my theme song for the past couple weeks.
Yeah.
Sorry.
Waiting.
The Waiting.
Oh.
We're coming through okay.
Oh, people were commenting here.
Oh.
Oh, Jason, our brother.
Hey, Jason, welcome to the show.
Thanks for chiming in live.
He said, what did he say?
A treat for sure.
I'm not sure exactly what part he's referring to.
Maybe just us in general.
We're a treat for sure.
Thanks, Jason.
Appreciate that.
So, Jason, you got lucky having us for brothers.
That's the name of the next song.
That's a great breakup song.
Oh, yeah.
You got lucky when you found me.
You got lucky.
It's a great breakup song.
And when you break up, you tell that boyfriend or girlfriend, don't come around here no more.
You could say we were in.
Yeah.
You don't come around here no more.
You don't come around here no more.
Stop.
Oh, I should have stopped then.
Oh, yeah.
Need we say more, but don't come around here no more?
Okay.
No, yeah.
Just go on.
okay this next song oh we're gonna dream i won't back down you can stand me up at the gates of hell
i won't back down apparently that's what kind of happened the day he died or remember like they said
he's dead and then he wasn't dead yeah he just wouldn't back down he just yeah they stood him
at the gates of hell i'm like i'm not gonna back down he fought till the end of the scene like
now this next song well not only is it not the worst of his best but it's probably
the best song i i could hear this on loop on repeat forever what you need to look for ryan
is go to youtube tom petty gainsville 30th anniversary tour it's on youtube okay great
a rendition of the song okay
oh i thought you're gonna do free falling
no so i say again not only is this next song not the worst of his best but it's probably the best of
his best in my opinion so let's do that again love running down okay here we go i thought you're gonna
say free falling no so what i said had to do with that okay roger that
now this uh i won't back down and running down a dream and then free falling came from his 1987 album
full moon fever and that of course was the album that was like the album that made me fall in love
with tom petty that's his thriller album that's his appetite appetite for distraction that's his back in
black whatever that's his that's the album that really is a perfect album it's a perfect album every song is so
good every song is so amazing it's just you do not tire listening to that album so it's good that you mentioned that it's actually tom petty's first solo album that's true even though this company the heartbreakers whatever right it's officially a solo album but when when tom petty it's like bruce springsteen in the east street band is it ever not i know i know is it ever not bruce well that's why when you have such a strong band leader in a band like let's say like axa rose or trent
or trent rezzner or billy corgan it doesn't really kind of matter sometimes who the side players might be because you got the striking force that's going to deliver so yeah running down a dream next track is well we all know this one the great scene and jerry mcguire
great song that my three-year-old daughter said the other day i'm three i'm three i'm three
yeah it's true that's true you're you're three you're three great song we uh great scene the jerry mcguire movie
ruben you had me at hello and this is uh now from his next album after the full moon fever great follow up
We'll get still.
I'm running the dry.
Baby, God, please.
I'm coming down.
The only bad thing about this episode is I want to listen to every song.
Oh, I didn't say about the song.
No.
I just want to listen to every song all the way through, and it's frustrating.
It's a tease, but we can't make this out of it.
Just buy the album.
Listen to it on YouTube.
I don't care.
If you're not a Tom Petty listener, listen to him.
Really, unfortunately, it shouldn't take his death.
But you know what?
A lot of people already knew who he was.
Oh, yeah.
Lester's career.
So 80 million albums.
He had an audience.
He had an audience.
It sold out.
It's amazing.
Good.
Yeah.
I got cheap seats that were released that day, $49.50.
Nice.
Yeah.
So his concert was not empty.
It wasn't like a great wide open.
No,
it was not.
That song without lyrics.
He had was a great example of a storytelling.
Yeah.
Do where so much can be put in just a few verses.
You have a whole thing.
I remember as a kid,
like,
Hey,
Johnny Depp's on there.
I saw like Johnny Depp when I was a kid.
Yeah.
Johnny Depp.
Boy,
he's yeah.
Well,
a rough life.
Well,
it was kind of fun if you're in your twenties,
I guess.
But when you're 50,
it makes you look like a loser.
I wonder what weird makeup movie he'll do next.
Okay.
So that's actually his biggest radio hit right there.
Yeah.
It's interesting.
But popularity we see on iTunes,
I won't back down.
Free falling are the two most popular.
And this has been the third popular.
And this is the last song of the album.
I believe the song was made for the album.
Was that a song?
This was a song that was made for the album.
I not very good.
I should know this,
but yeah,
you should know,
right?
Oh,
it's a,
it's a cover.
Okay.
Yeah.
so it doesn't really count,
but the actually is really fun song.
Just give a little sample.
it's not a bad song,
but we won't even really kind of include it because it is a cover song.
So we have 17 songs to choose from Ruben.
We're 20 minute mark.
Hard.
Oh,
we're at 20 minute mark.
Yeah.
If you can,
well,
I can listen to Tom Petty all day.
once this is done uploading,
I'm going to download this video because I can own it because I know Facebook's going to delete it.
So if you're listening to this live,
awesome.
Or else you're going to have to wait to the iTunes release,
but here you go.
So Ruben,
uh,
this is tough because they're all great.
I wonder if we're going to choose the same one and I have my reasons,
but yeah,
what's yours?
Okay.
Okay.
Sorry.
So that air isn't good for,
we're thinking this is where the end of casting or right.
I had the answer already,
but it's just hard to say.
Yeah.
I want to say something in the air because he didn't write it.
That way.
I feel like it's not sacrilegious.
No,
we're not doing it.
We're not including that.
We're not including it.
We're not including it.
Oh,
God,
Ryan.
Okay.
Let me do mine.
What do you think?
So my,
well,
unless you're ready.
Just go ahead.
Go ahead.
You're having a hard time with this.
This is not just disrespecting Tom.
Pull off the bandaid for me,
Ryan.
Yes.
My least favorite of his best songs from the best hits is,
Mary Jane's last dance.
Oh,
really?
Yes.
Yes.
When it was,
even when it was first released in what?
94.
I love it.
I didn't say I didn't love it.
I just,
it's my least favorite from all of these.
If this fell off,
the greatest hits album.
Uh-huh.
but I'll tell you the close second was you got lucky.
So I know,
but anyways,
the reason why I'm last is one of the few songs where the chorus is worse than the lead up to the chorus.
I like the,
oh my,
my,
oh,
hell yeah.
That part.
I love that part,
but when it gets to the chorus,
I'm bored.
So ironically,
the chorus last dance of the Mary Jane chorus,
I actually find boring and repetitive.
Okay.
Well,
I'm sure there's,
because it is the number one,
the one that number one,
according to iTunes,
it's the most popular song on here next to,
I won't back down and,
uh,
free falling.
So obviously it's a popular amongst fans,
but,
uh,
mine is don't do me like that.
Okay.
That's fair.
That's fair.
I like the song,
but yeah,
I get it.
Okay.
That's it.
I still respect you as a fellow professional broadcaster.
Well,
I'm neither a professional nor broadcaster.
Um,
I guess I just don't respect you.
Yeah,
true.
Anyways,
for thanks for joining us on today's episode of the worst,
the best of Tom Petty.
Remember in front of every silver lining,
there's a cloud.
Thanks for finding it.
All right.
You found it too.
Rube.
Bless your heart.
All right.
We're,
we're,
we're out of here.
We're recording another one just so people know.
We're recording four tonight.
